Submitted by our JAG student Layla E., we honor Judith Jamison, an iconic dancer, choreographer, and artistic director. As a principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, she captivated audiences worldwide with her powerful performances. Later, as the company’s artistic director, she carried on Ailey’s legacy, mentoring new generations of dancers and expanding opportunities for Black artists in the world of dance. Known for her powerful voice and grace under adversity, Anderson became the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. Her historic 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial, after being denied a performance at Constitution Hall due to segregation, remains a defining moment in the fight for racial equality in the arts. Submitted by our JAG student Raphael C., we honor Francis Sumner, the first African American psychologist. Known as the "Father of Black Psychology," Sumner became the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in psychology in 1920. His groundbreaking work challenged racial biases in psychology and helped pave the way for future Black scholars in the field. His legacy continues to inspire those working to advance mental health and social justice.
